For building perfect wheels, correct spoke tension is most important. As the wheel rolls all spokes are stessed by a dynamic load. The key to a a stable spoke is that the preload (spoke tension) of the spoke is bigger than this dynamic load, otherwise the spoke is likely to fail quickly. Depending upon the rim, spoke tension is 1.100 N on the side with steep spokes (high profile rims even 1.600 N and more).
Even if you are an experienced wheelbuilder, this tool is essential, as precise spoke tension is difficult to feel.
